SAN FRANCISCO–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Luminate Health, an innovative software-as-a-service (SaaS) provider that gives labs a digital platform for their patients to access and understand their lab test results, today announced that its first-of-its-kind, web-based service, which has already been tapped by regional US labs, is now engaging with labs across the US. The announcement comes as the compliance date for a new federal patient access rule approaches.
“Our unique model connects labs, physicians, and patients, and our patient-centric approach ensures that patients can now benefit from their lab results in a way that they never could before”
Laboratories have until October 6 of this year to comply with a federal rule from the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), which will require them to provide patients with direct access to their lab results. Under the new rule, labs must make results available to patients within 30 days upon request, with no approval required from the ordering physician. The rule covers all CLIA and CLIA-exempt laboratories covered under HIPAA.
Luminate Health is not only helping labs address the new rule, but also enabling them to go a step further. Using the company’s unique web-based service, labs can now let patients electronically access their lab results from anywhere, and can help present these results in a way that makes sense to patients. The service can also help physicians enhance their relationships with their patients and improve patient satisfaction. With the ruling, labs now have an opportunity to empower patients and contribute to improving patient outcomes.
“We’re not just helping labs check the box on the new rule; we’re helping them give patients important context and understanding they need to communicate in a more meaningful way with their providers and become active managers of their own health,” said Shally Madan, Co-founder of Luminate Health. “Today, most patient portals or patient access solutions provide lab result data to patients with limited usability and without any context. That can create problems for patients as they are now getting direct access to their critical medical information. It can create problems for providers and labs too.
“Our unique model connects labs, physicians, and patients, and our patient-centric approach ensures that patients can now benefit from their lab results in a way that they never could before,” continues Madan.
The company is partnering with commercial and hospital labs, and says that in just the last two months it has provided patients and providers with access to over 120,000 lab results.
